Joyeux Noel (Merry Christmas) – The World War I Christmas Truce (Rated PG-13)
Please join us as we celebrate the season and commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. All are welcome!
|Joyeux Noel captures a rare moment of grace from one of the worst wars in the history of mankind, World War I. The movie is based on the true story of an impromptu, spontaneous Christmas Eve truce declared by Scottish, French and German troops in the trenches in France during 1914, five months after the start of World War I.
For one night, enemies leave their weapons behind as they band together in brotherhood and forget about the brutalities of war. Christmas carols sung by the soldiers of one nation are answered by those on the opposing side. Enlivened by the singing and the spirit of Christmas, the soldiers gather in no-man’s land to trade chocolates and champagne, play soccer, and compare pictures of their wives. For a brief moment in a brutal war, reluctant enemies are united in peace.
But when Christmas ends the war returns, and both on and off the battlefield, the soldiers suffer the consequences of their actions.
